Muted, Volume 1 Review

Muted Volume 1, by Miranda Munt, is a magical, witchy, sapphic, graphic novel full of wonderfully created characters. I’m surprised by how quickly I grew to feel connected with the characters! I’m generally not a graphic novel reader, but the cover art drew me to this one and I’m so glad I was approved for the ARC (Advance Reader Copy). I will happily buy this volume and all the following ones for my personal library. The art is gorgeous and evocative, the colors rich and deep. The trauma in the story is dealt with in a way that did not trigger me, although I’ll admit that I’m rarely triggered by my own experiences. The familiars were quirky and cute and the storyline was wonderful! I cannot wait for volume 2! Thanks to Netgalley and Clarkson Potter/Ten Speed Press for the lovely ARC.

 

 

Vacations Can Be Murder Book Review

Vacations Can Be Murder by Dawn M. Barclay is a true crime lovers guide to the darker side of New England. It’s a quick read due to, in most cases, brief synoptic overviews of the crimes committed in different areas of New England. Since it’s basically a travel itinerary, this isn’t a drawback, and if you’re intrigued by a case, a quick Google search will give you everything you could possibly want to know about the incident.

I like that the author has provided information about prisons and victim resources. There is also information about gravesites of both victims and criminals. As a true crime fanatic for decades, I’m looking forward to more volumes, particularly the south where I grew up. I’ve lived in the UK for 20 years now, but still love to read about American crime!
